Behavioral Changes

Behavioral changes in cats, such as not using the litter box or sudden aggression towards people or other pets, is a good sign that you need to take them to the vet. Cats often change their behavior (sometimes drastically) if they are not feeling well. A urinary tract infection, kidney disease, crystals, diabetes or other possible illness could be causing the unacceptable behavior. Before taking any action, try to rule out any medical issues such as the ones listed above. If no medical reason exists, think about whether there have been changes in your household that could be causing unnecessary stress to your cat. Most cats dislike change and do not deal well with things such as:

  • Moved furniture
  • Changes in litter box location or litter type
  • New home
  • New dog or new cat
  • New baby
  • Commotion and stress during holidays

For preventing and solving litter box problems, the Cats International web site provides a wealth of information. If needed, you can consult with an expert in cat behavior who will help with analyzing and modifying your cat's behavior.
